Born in the East Prussian town of Mallenuppen in 1934, Siegfried Matthus ranks among the foremost and most often performed European composers of our time. His operas have been widely performed on both sides of the Atlantic, as have his many chamber and orchestral works, including a whole spate of compositions for solo instrument(s) and orchestra.

Among his recent works are the Michael Ende-based opera, The Never-Ending Story, and the Te Deum, written for the reconsecration of Dresden's Frauenkirche and premiered there under the direction of his long-time champion, Kurt Masur.

Matthus is also credited as the founder and artistic director of the Kammeroper Rheinsberg.

"...the vocal writing is consistently lyrical-often breathtakingly ecstatic. ...Matthus's 'opera vision' casts a powerful spell, the work of a major composer with important things to say."

Peter G. Davis, New York Magazine

"He chooses important subject matter and handles it with seriousness and dramatic flair."

Andrew Porter, The New Yorker

"I suspect we may be hearing quite a bit from Siegfried Matthus over the next few years. ...[Matthus's] orchestration, however personal, is always sure; moreover, he knows how to write effectively for the voice."

Tim Page, New York Newsday
