Among the most prolific and colorful composers of his day, Leonardo Balada has produced an impressive catalogue that includes four operas as well as orchestral, choral, chamber and recital works, many of which may be heard on recordings.
Contrast is the word that occurs most frequently in describing both the man and his music. Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1933, Balada came to the United States as a student and has been on the faculty of Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh since 1970. As a personality, he combines modern American know-how with the soul of his native Catalonia and the result may be clearly detected in his music which often mixes avant-garde techniques and structures with folkloric elements and sounds.
Balada's principal publishers are G. Schirmer, Inc. and Beteca Music.
